The Asian Art section explores the world renowned Garrett Collection of Chinese and Japanese art. As one of the earliest American collections of Japanese art assembled, it provides an important insight into collecting habits of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among its highlights is one of only a half dozen examples of blue lacquer known to exist, as well as examples of Chinese Imperial porcelain.
The Decorative Arts section highlights the furniture, textiles, and other applied arts largely commissioned or collected by the Garretts. Beginning with the Aesthetic Movement of the 1880s and the talents of renowned design firms such as Herter Brothers, Liberty & Company, and Louis C. Tiffany and Company, Evergreen’s interiors have embraced each succeeding decorative trend—including the Bourbon, Colonial, Empire, and Renaissance revivals, the Arts and Crafts movement, and European modernism.
The Fine Arts section showcases modernist art assembled by Alice Warder Garrett and her husband, Ambassador John Work Garrett. Credited as the first Baltimore "gallery" to exhibit a Picasso, Evergreen’s collection of drawings, paintings, and sculpture document the couple’s aesthetic appreciation and connoisseurship, which began at the threshold of World War I. Included are works by such artists as Pierre Bonnard, Jean-Édouard Vuillard, Léon Bakst, Miguel Covarrubias, Raoul Dufy, Herbert Haseltine, Amedeo Modigliani, and Ignacio Zuloaga.
Evergreen’s John Work Garrett Library, built between the years immediately following the American Civil War and World War II, ranks among the most extensive private American collections of its kind from that period. Highlights include a recently discovered and ambitious rare book desiderata manuscript from the headiest period of John Work Garrett’s book collecting in 1929; an original John James Audubon engraved metal plate for his double-elephant folio Birds of America, a complete copy of which is also held by the library; the Garrett Zafarnama, a sumptuously illustrated fifteenth-century Persian illuminated manuscript by the renowned artist Bihzad; and all four seventeenth-century folios of Shakespeare’s collected plays.

It draws on the rich archaeological record of rural housing and evidence from literature or papyrological references to both urban and rural housing. The introduction critically considers the literature relevant to the topic in order to identify the research gap. Chapter I attempts to reconstruct the structure of urban and rural houses in Graeco- Roman Egypt in the light of papyri and archaeology. This aims to establish the physical and spatial framework for the rituals considered in the following chapters. In line with this reconstruction of domestic properties is the reconstruction of the architectural layout and use of the domestic pylon in Chapter II. Chapter III deals with two rituals enacted before the front door of the house, namely the sacrifice of fish on the 9th of Thoth and the sacrifice of pigs on the 15th of Pachon. Chapter IV considers the ritual of the illumination of lamps for the goddess Athena-Neith within and around houses on the 13th of Epeiph. Chapter V highlights the use of the house as an arena for social types of rituals associated with dining, birthdays, the mallokouria, the epikrisis, and marriage. Chapter VI explores the religious sphere of houses, which is obvious from domestic shrines, wall paintings with religious themes, and figurines of Egyptian and Graeco-Roman deities uncovered from houses. The last chapter deals with mourning rituals, which the house occupants performed after the demise of their beloved animals, such as dogs, and their family members. In the conclusion, I summarize my work and draw out its implications, suggesting that the house was the locus of social, religious, and funerary rituals in Graeco-Roman Egypt.

Summary: In summer 2015, performance artist Marina Abramovic and psychoanalyst Jeannette Fischer spent four days together at Abramovic's house in the Hudson Valley. Associating freely, they explored - from a psychoanalytical perspective - Abramovic's biography and art and what connects them. A better understanding of herself, her personality and her work, was Abramovic's objective. She claims that conversations with artists abound, with one curator saying this and another saying that. Yet there is no book in which psychoanalysis puts her life and artistic work in context. This new book aims to fill this gap. Yet it is not a therapist's report, nor a record of Fischer's analysis of Abramovic. In Following Piece (1969), Acconci followed one randomly chosen stranger through the streets of New York. A Line Made by Walking (1967), a black-and-white photograph of Richard Long’s imprint of a straight line in a field, was Long’s first walking art work, made on a journey to St Martin’s from his home in Bristol. Ana Mendieta’s influential Silueta Works in Mexico (1977) documents performances by the artist during her travel between Iowa and Mexico, in which she imprints her body on the landscape while addressing issues of displacement. Each of these works recognizes the walk and the journey as much more than just a basic human act. Rebecca Solnit observes that walking replicates thinking, adding “the motions of the mind cannot be traced, but those of the feet can.” These works trace the motions of wandering artists’ focused minds. Summary: Tramp art describes a particular type of wood carving practiced in the United States and Europe between the 1880s and 1940s in which discarded cigar boxes and fruit crates were notched and layered to make a variety of domestic objects. These were primarily boxes and frames in addition to small private altars, crosses, wall pockets, clock cases, plant stands, and even furniture. Whittling objects such as chains and ball-in-cage whimsies was a common hobby—including among rail-riding “hobos”—and for many years “tramp art” was believed to have been made by these itinerants as well. Although this notion has been widely dispelled, the name has stuck. In recent years efforts have been made to identify makers by name and reveal their stories. While some examples of tramp art may be attributed to itinerants, this carving style was more commonly a practice of working-class men creating functional objects for their households. No Idle Hands presents more than one hundred and fifty tramp art objects collected mainly from the United States and also including pieces from France, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil—demonstrating the far reach this art form has had. It includes works by contemporary artists, thus establishing tramp art as an ongoing folk art form rather than a vestige of the past. The pieces reproduced here reveal an artistic and intricate sensibility applied to each handcrafted piece. Essays consider assumptions about tramp art related to class, quality, and the anonymity of its makers and examine this practice through the lens of home and family while tracing its relationship to the tobacco industry. Summary: The current volume presents ten different studies dealing with the final stages of Hebrew book art production in medieval Iberia. Summary: Order and Confusion is the title of a groundbreaking and monumental reconstruction of the twelfth-century choir of St. Servatius Minster in Maastricht, based on its scholarly decoration program, comprising an altar, reliquary shrine, wall and vault paintings as well as other elements by Fred B.P Ahsmann. From the middle of the twelfth century on, the God-given Order was under ever-greater pressure. Confusion at the spiritual and governing level was giving rise to war and division in society. Which authority had been ordained by God to rule over his realm on earth: the emperor or the pope? The lack of certainty and heated conflict in response to this burning question had become a source of social upheaval, affecting both the pinnacle and foundation of the social pyramid. The enmity was so marked that the divine, cosmic Order was about to be plunged into chaos and utter confusion, with man pitted against man. It was a turn of events perceived at this time as the devil's pursuit. The end of days seemed near, with people waiting in fearful anticipation of the horrific scenes foretold by John the Evangelist in the Apocalypse. Nevertheless, the hope persisted that the emperor and those loyal to him might still be capable of restoring the divine Order. In the second half of the twelfth century, the choir of St. Servatius Church was completely renewed. A semicircular apse with dwarf gallery and flanking towers was added onto the existing choir, resulting in a monumental edifice that today still overlooks the Vrijthof. The choir's interior was also renewed at this time, with a large raised podium behind the altar built for the specific purpose of displaying the splendid and costly reliquary shrine of the church's patron saint, Servatius. Known as the 'Noodkist', the shrine is the only part of the choir's interior preserved to this day. All other elements have been lost over the centuries or are today dispersed among a number of different collections. The iconography of the representations on the Noodkist - the veritable showpiece of the Treasury of Saint Servatius - has been the subject of several studies. Never before, however, has anyone succeeded in discovering a unifying iconographic program that explains all of its elements. The key to solving this mystery, as has now been determined, lies not in the representations themselves, but in the twelfth-century surroundings in which the Noodkist once stood. The reliquary shrine of St. Servatius was by no means an object unto itself: new insights clearly indicate it was part of a much larger whole - a Gesamtkunstwerk - with a single all-embracing design that involved the choir interior's liturgical arrangement as well as the wall and vault paintings of the choir. In Order and Confusion, the author unravels the relationship between these various elements step by step. The results of this investigation into the monumental vault and wall paintings in the choir are nothing short of spectacular. As revealed here for the first time, the iconographic program of the choir of St Servatius is depicted in the Hortus Deliciarum, the famous manuscript compiled by the Abbess Herrad von Landsberg (ca. 1130-1195). Accompanied by additional research, this discovery laid the groundwork for the first successful analysis of the paintings in the choir. This in turn led to a new interpretation of the representations found on the Noodkist itself. When examined from the context of the images found on the choir vault and walls, elements of the shrine that had once seemed unusual and undecipherable (suddenly) fell perfectly into place. The iconographic studies presented in this book are supplemented with extensive reconstructions of the configuration of altar, retable, and Noodkist, as well as a description of all elements of the choir interior no longer existing. The book Order and Confusion elucidates how all key political and ecclesiastic themes of the twelfth century come together in the twelfth-century choir of St. Servatius: the conflict between pope and emperor; various notions of earthly power and heavenly order; and the anticipated end of days of the Sacred History. The Chapter of St. Servatius - having close ties to the emperor - apparently resorted to every visual means available in order to convey its position during this period of tumult, in an era hovering between order and confusion.

Summary: The Ashmolean Museum is fortunate in having the most comprehensive British collection of the art of the Indian subcontinent outside London. Especially strong in sculpture, this rich representation of Indian art from prehistory to the twentieth century has come about through the generosity of our benefactors over more than three centuries. The Museum's first major Indian sculpture acquisition, a stone Pala-style Vishnu image of the eleventh century, was given in 1686 by Sir William Hedges, a governor of the East India Company in Bengal. From the late nineteenth century, a substantial core of the present collection was assembled at the University's former Indian Institute Museum (1897-1962), precursor of the Department of Eastern Art, which opened within the Ashmolean in 1963. Since that date many more Indian objects of all periods have been acquired by gift, bequest or purchase.

Summary: The Las Vegas Strip has impersonated the Wild West, with saloon doors and wagon wheels; it has decked itself out in midcentury modern sleekness. It has illuminated itself with twenty-story-high neon signs, then junked them. After that came Disney-like theme parks featuring castles and pirates, followed by replicas of Venetian canals, New York skyscrapers, and the Eiffel Tower. More recently, the Strip decided to get classy, with casinos designed by famous architects and zillion-dollar collections of art. Las Vegas became the “implosion capital of the world” as developers, driven by competition, got rid of the old to make way for the new—offering a non-metaphorical definition of “creative destruction.” InThe Strip, Stefan Al examines the many transformations of the Las Vegas Strip, arguing that they mirror transformations in America itself. The Strip is not, as popularly supposed, a display of architectural freaks but representative of architectural trends and a record of social, cultural, and economic change. Summary: Latif Al Ani (*1932 in Baghdad) who was the first to capture cosmopolitan life in Iraq in the 1950s to 1970s is known as the “father of Iraqi photography”. His black and white images represent a unique visual memory of the country during its belle époque. Al Ani presented the vivid Iraqi culture in its abundance and complexity: besides documenting the westernized everyday life, the political culture and industry, he also captured images of Iraq from the air for the Iraq Petroleum Company. However, under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime he ceased photographing. Today, his photographs give testimony to an era long gone. The exhibition at the Iraq Pavilion during the Venice biennale in 2016 focused on works from the early period of his career, showing both modernising trends and the retention of ancient traditions as themes of Al Ani’s work.
